Surfing in Wales

South Wales is the most popular area for surfing. Pembrokeshire and North Wales have excellent breaks and far fewer people in the water.

SWELLS - The most common swell direction is from the west. All coasts pick up less common southwest swells from lows out to the west of Portugal. As South Wales has strong tides & big tidal ranges, the state of the tide can dramatically effect the wave height. On a spring tide Porthcawl Rest Bay can be knee-high at low tide, then overhead at high tide !

WINDS - Prevailing winds are from the southwest. Although this is onshore, the coastline offers many sheltered spots.

Classic conditions occur when there is a strong and preferably slow-moving storm (or hurricane) out to the west or southwest, and a weak high over Scotland or Ireland when the swell hits.
