The west coast of Portugal picks up any swell going from lows in the North Atlantic.

SWELLS - The prevailing swells are from the northwest. The continental shelf shelves fairly steeply to the west, allowing big swells to maintain their strength as they approach the coast.

WINDS - Winds are variable and tend to be lighter than across most of Europe.

Classic conditions occur when there is a storm (or hurricane) out to the west or northwest, and a high pressure across Ireland or the Bay of Biscay when the swell hits.
