Surfing in France

The southwest coast of France has the most powerful beach breaks in mainland Europe.

SWELLS - The prevailing swells are from the northwest. A deep water trench in the Bay of Biscay allows these swells to maintain their strength as they track into the coast. Gnarly beach breaks abound !

WINDS - Prevailing winds are from the west. Common summer high pressures over Northern Europe generate light offshore winds for the west coast of France.

Classic conditions occur when there is a storm (or hurricane) out to the west of France, and a high over the UK when the swell hits.
