Surfing in the Canaries

The Canary Islands get more swell than anywhere else in Europe.

WAVES
The prevailing swells are from the north & northwest. Good surfing can be had on all coasts, but the north coasts normally have by far the biggest waves. The islands are volcanic and shelve incredibly steeply into deep water. This means that Atlantic swells lose very little energy before reaching the shore.

WINDS
Prevailing winds are from the northeast. Some areas can develop strong daytime winds due to the combination of powerful thermals and steep geographical features. Strong sea breezes, though great for the windsurfers, can be a pain for surfing. Head out at dawn and dusk !

Classic conditions occur when there is a storm (or hurricane) anywhere in the Atlantic, and a high pressure between Portugal and Morocco when the swell hits.
